OpenAI has oscillated between two paths. While shutting down Atlas, OpenAI introduced a new mode called Ultrafast, designed to significantly accelerate the working speed of its latest and most powerful model, GPT-5.6 Sol.
OpenAI states that Ultrafast can work at 14x the speed of standard processing, delivering up to 750 output tokens, which represent the distinct pieces of text generated by a large language model when interacting with humans, per second.
In a blog post Thursday, OpenAI wrote that until now, getting real-time speed typically meant choosing a smaller or more specialized model. Ultrafast points to progress in a new direction: more useful work per second.
OpenAI's competitors, such as Anthropic, have similarly launched accelerated versions of their models. Claude has fast mode, although it does not deliver the kind of speed OpenAI is offering here.
OpenAI suggests that this high-performance version of GPT-5.6 Sol can be deployed across numerous corporate workflows, most notably incident response, customer service and support, financial market analysis, and e-commerce, among other relevant areas.
Ultrafast, currently being released in preview, is powered by OpenAI's partnership with chipmaker Cerebras. The preview is currently available only to a small group of customers, though OpenAI says it will expand access as capacity grows.
